It has 'morphed' to a\nweb-based successor to Deepwoods Software's Home Librarian 3 system.<\/p>\n\n<p>This plugin implements a simple and basic, web-based, library catalog\nand circulation system.  There are short codes that can be added to\npages of a WordPress site to search and display items in the library\ncollection.  And there are back-end (admin) pages that implement\nmanagement of the collection, management of patrons (users) of the\nlibrary, as well as implementing the functionality of a  circulation\ndesk.<\/p>\n\n<!--section=installation-->\n<p>The plugin can be installed by uploading the Zip file to the plugin\ninstaller or unpacking the zip file under the plugins directory.<\/p>\n\n<p>There are some options that can be set, but these options are not needed\nfor basic operation.  There are three short codes that can be added to\npages or posts for front end searching and display of your library\ncollection and there are a number of back-end (dashboard) pages for all\nof the management of your library.<\/p>\n\n<p>Please   read  the  <a href=\"http:\/\/plugins.svn.wordpress.org\/weblibrarian\/assets\/user_manual\/user_manual.pdf\" title=\"User Manual (English)\">PDF  User   Manual<\/a>   (<a href=\"http:\/\/plugins.svn.wordpress.org\/weblibrarian\/assets\/user_manual\/user_manual_IT.pdf\" title=\"User Manual (Italian)\">also   available   in\nItalian<\/a>)  for complete documentation on using this plugin. This\nis a fairly  non-trivial  plugin, and there is not a simple  quick-start guide\nfor the  impatient.  The user  manual  files are  1548805  bytes  long for the\nItalian  version  and  1548666  for the  Englist  version  and <a href=\"http:\/\/plugins.svn.wordpress.org\/weblibrarian\/assets\/user_manual\/md5sum.txt\">MD5  sums  are\navailable<\/a>.  If you are having  trouble  opening  the PDFs,\nplease  check the size and the MD5Sum.  If the size is right and the MD5Sum is\nright, try another PDF viewer.<\/p>\n\n<!--section=faq-->\n<p>Support is handled either with [Deepwoods Software's Bugzilla][bugreport]\n(submit any bugs and feature requests to the Bugzilla) or though the\n[Deepwoods Software's Support page][support] (use this for  comments or\nfor general questions).<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt id='where%20are%20the%20admin%20menus%3F'><h3>Where are the admin menus?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>You've successfully installed the Web Librarian, but none of the admin\nmenus (Patrons, Collection, Circulation Types, Circulation Desk, or\nCirculation Stats) show up. Why is this? This is because you are\nprobably logged in as the web site administrator (your user role is\nAdministrator).  You need to create at least a user with a user role of\nLibrarian and then log in as this user.  Optionally, you can also\ncreate users with roles of Senior Aid or Volunteer, who have lesser\nprivileges -- these latter users make sense if you are a large enough\nlibrary that has additional staff (\"Senior Aid\") or uses additional\nworkers (\"Volunteer\") who man the circulation desk(s).  It is important\nto read the subsection titled \"User Role Setup\" in the \"Installation and\nbasic setup\" section <em>carefully<\/em> and to be sure you understand it fully.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id='which%20stylesheet%20%28css%29%20selectors%20can%20i%20use%20to%20modify%20the%20appearance%20of%20the%20front%20end%3F'><h3>Which stylesheet (CSS) selectors can I use to modify the appearance of the front end?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>This is described in the appendix of the user manual.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id='i%20am%20having%20a%20problem%20with%20the%20bulk%20upload.'><h3>I am having a problem with the bulk upload.<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>Here are some tips relating to problems with bulk uploading a collection:<\/p>\n\n<p>If you export a CSV file from Excel (and probably  other 'modern'  spreadsheet\nprograms as well), you should check the resulting CSV file with a <em>plain text<\/em>\neditor.  Things  to  look  for  include  extra  commas  at the  ends of  lines\n('phantom'  or empty  columns)  and strange  characters,  partitularly  in the\nheadings and in barcodes (if you using your own barcodes).<\/p>\n\n<p>Other  issues  involving  issues  with  newline  characters.  Most of the time\nWordPress will be running on a LAMP server (a Linux  machine).  Linux uses the\nlinefeed character (ASCII 10, Ctrl-j) as newline character.  MS-Windows uses a\ntwo  character  sequence  for  newlines:  carriage  return  (ASCII 13, Ctrl-m)\nfollowed  by a  linefeed  (ASCII  10,  Ctrl-j).  MacOSX  uses just a  carriage\nreturn (ASCII 13, Ctrl-m).  Web browsers are <em>supposed<\/em> to normalize uploaded\nplain text files, but  sometimes  this does not happen.  It might be necessary\nto fix things in advance of uploading.<\/p>\n\n<p>Finally, try your upload in <em>small<\/em> chunks, at least until you get the process\nworked out. Remember  that most  WordPress  (PHP) installs have a limit on the\nmaximum size of uploaded files, so a really large database is going to have be\nuploaded in chunks anyway.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id='how%20do%20i%20check%20an%20item%20out%3F'><h3>How do I check an item out?<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>In order to check an item out, you need to load a patron record into the \ncirculation desk page.  You can use the \"Find Patron\" button to search the \npatrons by name and then  select the proper  result  from the list of results \nin the drop down and then click the \"Lookup Patron\" to load that patron's\nrecord.  You can then enter the item's barcode in the item barcode field and\nclick the \"Checkout\" button.  It is possible to pre-load the item barcode\nfield before looking up the patron.<\/p><\/dd>\n<dt id='search%20does%20not%20work%20-%20sends%20me%20back%20to%20my%20home%20page'><h3>Search does not work - sends me back to my home page<\/h3><\/dt>\n<dd><p>This is caused by a conflict with  permalinks  and form handling.
